Testing the Performance of the Z-Nano Mouse

Posted by Simon | Reviews,Video | Thursday 24 June 2010 1:52 pm

After a few days of using the Z-Nano I decided to tests its performance using a flash based game which tests the mouse’s movement, accuracy, consistency, strength and speed. Being the smallest mouse in the world, I didn’t have high hopes for the test.

If you want to know how it performed please check out the results after the break.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

Before using the Z-Nano for the test I needed another mouse to compare it with so I decided to go with my Microsoft Arc. Shortly after I repeated the tests using the tiny Z-Nano. The results can be seen below.

As you can see the Z-Nano’s performance was an “Epic Fail”. Surprisingly it beat the Arc in terms of accuracy probably due to its higher dpi. With that said, the Z-Nano is a very usable mouse. Maybe not the most productive but for such a small and portable gadget it easily beats most built in touch-pads.

I have been using the Z-nano with my notebook, in the office and travels, and I find it really handy.

From the video, it appears that you might have used the default speed of the mouse to do your test. The speed of the cursor can be adjusted to a maximum of 1600 dpi. The default speed is set to 800 dpi, which would be slow for interactive games. You may want to increase the speed by depressing the Scroll Up + Right Button simultaneously, and then using the scroll up button to change the speed. Once the speed is set, click the Right button to get back to Normal mode.

Also, I noticed that you are gripping the little mouse with your your three fingers, which can be tiring if you use it for a long time.
I found out that for a small gadget like Z-Nano, a better way is to rest your palm on the table, with the index finger resting on the mouse. No gripping means less stress ;-) Position the 3rd notch of the index finger on the golden magnet, with the first notch (where the fingernail resides) should be extended out from the front of the mouse. I also normally rest my middle finger on the table, and use it as a guide to prevent the mouse from rocking sideways as I move it. By leaning the middle against the right side of the mouse makes for more stable mousing.

I have tested it on white, black, glossy and lacquered table tops, and it has worked well for me ;-) I am using it to Photoshop regularly without any difficulties. The best part is, whenever my index finger gets tired, I can easily switch it to another finger to operate it.

It may not work as great as a gaming mouse, but it is one of the better portable mouse around.

    Hi Rory,

I actually tried setting the dpi to max and it was way too sensitive for the test. If I remember correctly I set the dpi to 1200 (blinking orange and blue) for this particular test.

If you have the time feel free to play the game I posted and send me the results so I can update the post with more results.

Try the opposite — the lowest DPI might actually be better for games.

    Will give it a shot.

Edit gave it a shot with all dpi settings and found the 400dpi to give the best performance, still got an epic fail score for the test though. :(

Gave it a try with the program ;-) Quite fun actually!

My score with Z-Nano (set to 1600 dpi):
    Movement: 80
    Accuracy: 94%
    Consistency: 63%
    Strength: 1069
    Speed: 72

Looking at the comparative score, Z-Nano is weak in 2 areas, namely, the strength (speed of scroll) and the speed (speed of left button clicks).
Z-Nano’s strength is about 1/10th that of some gaming mice, which means it scrolls relatively a lot slower. The speed of left button clicks is also less, about 1/2 to 1/3 the speed of the faster mouse.

Z-Nano is probably not meant for gaming, where fast scroll and button clicks are important. For someone like me who uses the notebook to photoshop, create powerpoint slides, work with worksheets and documents and to surf the web regularly, accuracy is probably more important. The current speed of scrolling and clicking is more than sufficient for these tasks.

Being small and portable makes Z-Nano an excellent choice for travelers and mobile users. For serious gamers, it’s definitely a No-No, and it’s definitely better to get a good gaming mouse ;-)

I would recommend it as one of the preferred mobile mouse around due its unique features and size, but I would definitely not use it as a gaming mouse ;-) (unless I am looking for something to blame every time I lose a game.)

    Thanks for the review, Simon!
